Home educating

They came into the Program in January of 2006. They are still enrolled in our school as of this writing.

P. is a 10 year old boy with multiple diagnoses. He had severe anxiety at school when Grand mother contacted me at the end of the year 2005. She was worried because the anxiety was causing his health issues to increase. P’s Neurologist suggested home education as a way to improve self-esteem, nervousness, and depression. The school had put P. on the ‘A-B Honor Roll’ for his grades, however, the teacher indicated he was working below grade level.

Upon enrollment with our program we administered a Brigance Diagnostic CIBS-r to determine his actual educational level. His grade equivalent abilities scored at the following levels:

Word Recognition: 2.5 grade equivalent (ge)
Reading Vocabulary: 3.5 ge
Word Analysis: 4 ge
Spelling: 4 ge
Computation: 2.5 ge
Problem solving: 2 ge

An individualized education program was designed by myself and the grand parents and put into place.

In an interview with the grand parents two months after implementation of the program, they reported excellent results. A recent visit to the doctor brought good news. P. had gained 9 lbs. since December and, according to his physician, his health was better than she had seen it in the past 3 years. Grandparents have noticed significant changes in P.’s self-esteem and he is asking to play learning games and read with them. His depression and anxiety have improved remarkably according to Grand Mother. P.’s psychologist is also pleased with his progress and is encouraging the family to continue home educating. Further testing will be completed one year after his enrollment into our school.
